By Inés Alberdi, Executive Director, UNIFEM Since 2000, gender equality and women’s rights advocates have been saying that progress on normative frameworks and agreements has been steady, but that implementation has lagged far behind. Today, 15 years after Beijing, women are still outnumbered 4 to 1 in legislatures around the world; the proportion of women’s work in vulnerable employment is increasing in almost all parts of the developing world, reaching 85 percent in some regions; women’s wages still lag behind those of men; and millions of women endure some form of gender-based violence, often on a daily basis.

 

International Cooperation between DEVNET and China Ordos City

In order to promote and implement two cooperation projects, Economist Mr. Daniel Barrios, General Director of DEVNET, visited the city of Ordos in May 2010. Following extensive interviews and analysis with government officials, a Cooperation Agreement between the Government of Ordos City and Devnet Association has been agreed to be signed.

 

Kenyan women in rural communities to benefit from information on market opportunities

Kenyan women in livelihood and small businesses stand to benefit from the information exchange which has been started as a result of the cooperation agreement recently signed between Devnet Association and Namwisisi Women Group (NWG) of Kenya. Devnet is an international non-government organization with Consultative Status Category 1 granted by the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations

 

Accord signed to extend WINNER to China, Mekong countries

An agreement between Devnet Association and the Women’s Federation of Shanghai was recently signed to intensify the cooperation and communication between international organizations and local Chinese government entities in the run up to the Shanghai World Expo in 2010.  The agreement is viewed as a strategic alliance between these organizations, whereby Devnet will undertake preparatory activities for the introduction of the WINNER Program in China, including the countries of the Mekong Sub-region in Southeast Asia

With export performance adversely affected by lack of buyers from traditional markets in developed countries, as a result of the global economic recession, woes of developing countries have become cause for concern.  No less than the United Nations has taken notice of the 90 million more people across the developing world that has been pushed to extreme poverty.
